Nephrologists are seeing more patients in their late 20s and early 30s, many from software companies, suffering from renal diseases and kidney failure. The high intake of junk food, alcohol accompanied with smoking and lack of physical activity are to blame for this trend.
Every year, about 2-4 lakh people in India suffer from chronic kidney diseases (CKD) and many die due to organ failure. Doctors are also blame it on the high incidence of blood pressure and diabetes among young Indians.
"In Bangalore, a number of young professionals, many from the software sector, suffer from kidney ailments. At least 20%-30% of my patients are such professionals in their 30s. The rise in cases of high BP and diabetes due to sedentary habits is the cause. All these can also lead to heart failure," said Dr H Sudarshan Ballal, senior nephrologist and medical director, Manipal Hospitals.
"Kidney ailments are directly related to salt and sugar intake. Also, smoking is harmful for the kidneys. Diabetes and hypertension are on rise among young professional due these habits. It's advisable to maintain a healthy lifestyle and indulge in regular physical activity to keep kidney ailments at bay," said Dr Rajanna Sridhar, consultant, nephrologist, Fortis Hospitals.
