Over 10 lakh students from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,
including 59,110 from the city are expected to appear for the class X SSLC
examinations set to begin on Wednesday.
The first paper will be Language I.
Schools said they were expecting students to perform better
this year, as there had been some confusion and anxiety last year when
Samacheer Kalvi, the uniform syllabus system, was introduced for the SSLC,
Anglo-Indian, Matriculation and OSLC streams.
The Sate recorded an 86.2 pass percentage under the uniform
syllabus last year, according to the directorate of government examinations.
“We have written so many revision exams, that I am eagerly
waiting for the examination to start,” said S. Meghna, a student of a
matriculation school who has taken Hindi as her second language.
A day before the exam, R. Kamakshi, a student of a Chennai
School sat with her nose deep in a Tamil textbook. “I am only revising what I
have already learnt. I am staying away from portions which I have to study
afresh,” she said.
“We wrote three revision exams and are quite confident. My
elder sister dropped out after finishing class X, but I want to become an
engineer,” she added.
V. Carmel Mary, headmistress, Chennai High School, Vannia
Teynampet, said that after the half-yearly exams, they start coaching students
for the final examinations with special classes after school hours.
“The Corporation has also distributed special material
containing frequently-asked questions. We identify students who need special
attention and spend more time with them,” she said , adding that the
Corporation also provides evening snacks to the students.
Sheela Ragavan, principal, TI Matriculation Higher Secondary
School said that students should be comfortable this year as they were able
give them four revision exams.
According to the directorate, of the 10,69,501 students
enrolled for the class X SSLC exam in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry this year,
7,70,158 students are from the Tamil medium stream.
The exam will take place across 3,013 examination centres,
and of the 70,233 private candidates set to take the examination, 21,479 will
be writing it for the first time.
The exams will end on April 12 with the social science
paper.
