Gender studies in CBSE syllabus

The CBSE has written to schools to introduce " Human Rights and Gender Studies" as a new elective subject in class XI from 2013-'14.

The board is introducing this on a first-come first-served basis in 50 schools. It can be offered as an elective subject with any combination of three other electives and a language. It will have a 70 marks theory paper besides 30 marks for a case study- based project and viva voce.
The introduction of the subject is intended to strengthen respect for human rights, gender and fundamental freedoms; holistic development of the human personality and the sense of its dignity; promotion of understanding, tolerance, gender equality, and harmony amongst all and enabling of all persons to participate effectively in a free, just and more humane society.
Explaining the reason for introducing the course from class XI, a CBSE official said, "After ten years of general education, students branch out at the beginning of senior secondary level and are exposed to the rigours of various disciplines for the first time. This is the stage when they are made to start reflecting over their future life and decide a career. At this point, they also become aware of the real world around them".
The official added, "Human rights and gender studies have become a strong unifying moral force that transcends national boundaries and empowers ordinary people everywhere. The mandate for human rights education is unequivocal: you have a human right to know your rights".
The subject is being introduced amid rising concern that crimes against women are increasing in the country due to lack of respect for women.
