Maharashtra State Board examinations that commence from February 21.

NAGPUR: There has been a sharp decline of over 10,000 students from the Nagpur division for Maharashtra State Board examinations that commence from February 21. Over 3.72 lakh students will appear for the HSC and SSC examinations as compared to 3.82 lakh last year. While there has been a slight increase of seven students in SSC, there has been a decline of over 10,000 students in HSC.

Nagpur division chairman Chandramani Borkar, who provided these details, said many students were shifting to CBSE, ICSE and other courses, and this might explain the decline. Endorsing his view, board secretary for Nagpur division Shriram Chavan added that many students prefer to complete their standard XII from places like Kota, where they can simultaneously pursue coaching classes for various entrance exams like JEE.
He said that this year 1,65,960 students will appear in the HSC exams from 383 centres as compared to 1.76 lakh from same number of centres last year. The students are from 1,176 junior colleges in the division. In SSC exams, 2,06,773 students will appear from 648 centres as compared to 2,06,766 from 652 centres last year. The students will be appearing from about 2,472 schools.

Borkar said the practical exams for HSC will commence from February 2 and continue till February 18. However, there was a big change as compared to last year. "From this year, there will be no external for conducting practical exams. The schools have to conduct their internal exams and award the marks," he said.

This year's exams will be conducted as per new course. "There will be one combined paper of physics, chemistry and mathematics, but will be conducted in two sections of 35 marks each. The remaining 30 marks will be given through practical, project work and viva-voce. Similarly, mathematics paper will be of 80 marks theory and 20 marks viva-voce," he said.

"The number of flying squads would be doubled as compared to last year. This has been done to keep a check on malpractices. Such cases are rampant during the SSC exams due to more number of students and centres," he said. Besides flying and sitting squads, CCTV cameras under supervision of district collectors will be put up, he added.

The timetable for board exams was declared a year earlier, under the new policy by state government. This was to help students prepare and the administration to chalk out logistics. However, after stiff opposition from students due to packed schedule, the time table has been revised. Now, the last paper will be held on March 26.
